Oregon Expected to Land Former Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel

Dillon Gabriel, who has spent two seasons with the Sooners, was one of many quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal. With Bo Nix in his final collegiate season and headed for the NFL Draft, the Ducks have a big choice to make. Do they stick with Ty Thompson who has been with the team since 2021 or do they turn to the transfer portal once again?

Nix is set to play in the Fiesta Bowl against the Liberty Flames on Jan. 1, 2024. Heading into next season, the Ducks currently only have Thompson and Austin Novosad under contract at QB. They are also expected to three-star recruit Luke Moga in the 2024 class. However, none of those choices give the opportunity for the Ducks to commit to competing in their first season in the BIG TEN. Neither of them are experienced.

So that leave the Ducks to where many expect them to look… the transfer portal. An initial report announced that Cam Ward would be headed to Oregon. The report of that was falsely published. It turns out that Zachary Neel of Ducks Wire wrote that article in preparation in case that it did happen. That article has since been removed from all publications.

Many of the QB’s in the transfer portal have been linked to the Ducks including Dante Moore, who was originally set to commit to Oregon, and Dillon Gabriel. The former UCF and Oklahoma QB has a sixth year of eligibility left. He’d present the same play style as Nix, a quarterback who can complete passes at a high rate and has a very low interception percentage. In 2023, he completed his passes for 69.3% with 3660 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 373 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Nothing is set in stone, but it seems likely that the Ducks are looking at quarterbacks out of the transfer portal.
