College basketball upsets are among the most exciting sporting events in the country, and this year, they’re happening nightly.
College basketball is arguably the most hectic, unpredictable sport in the country. There are 358 division one basketball teams in the country, and it’s nearly impossible to rank them perfectly.
The poll put out each week by the Associated Press is considered the accurate rankings of teams. At the beginning of this week, the Alabama Crimson Tide was deemed the No. 1 team in the nation for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
Upsets have come in waves in college hoops, as they’re happening consistently every week. Because of the fact that there’s no dominant team in college basketball, there’s been a lot of shuffling in the rankings. There is a lot of parity with teams beating up on each other in every conference.
There’s not one dominant team in the country
Firstly, the Tide lost Wednesday night to the 10th ranked Tennessee Volunteers and project to slide in next week’s rankings.
The Purdue Boilermakers lost for the third time in four games against the Maryland Terrapins on Thursday night. They’ve hung around the top of the rankings all year, but seem to be collapsing at the worst time.
The Houston Cougars sit in the second spot. They’ve dominated all year, but have one blemish on their record this year. A loss at home to an abysmal Temple team in January is the only major upset on their resume.
The North Carolina Tar Heels began the year as the No. 1 team in the country but haven’t sniffed the top 25 in months. The rankings are ever changing, with upsets looming all over the board. Also, Indiana has been a team roaming at the top of the Big 10, but have had some uncharacteristic losses along the way.
After all, college basketball upsets are great for the sport and should shape up for a great NCAA tournament. Typically, the top three or four teams dominate all year and create high expectations for the tournament. This year, it will even more unpredictable than normal.
