A day following the Eagles Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs, offensive coordinator Shane Steichen flew out to Indianapolis on Monday afternoon with optimism of finalizing a head coaching deal. The deal has now been made official, as the Colts announce Steichen will become the teams’ next head coach.

Steichen, 37, has served as the Eagles offensive coordinator for past two seasons.

Under Shane Steichen, the Eagles offense had six players selected to the Pro Bowl, as well as an MVP runner-up quarterback in Jalen Hurts. Furthermore, Steichen helped produce the NFLs’ No. 3 offense in both yards per game, as well as a league-leading 32 rushing touchdowns.

An ironic hiring, as it was just two years ago the Eagles hired Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni to become their next head coach.

Steichen was just recently considered a leading candidate. Prior, it was interim head coach Jeff Saturday that was considered to be the favorite for the job. Saturday had no former NFL coaching experience before being hired by Colts owner Jim Irsay. Moreover, it was Saturday’s leadership his prolific career with the Colts. Moreover, Saturday was voted into six pro bowls as the team’s starting center.

The Eagles may also be losing defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who is set to interview with the Arizona Cardinals regarding their head coaching vacancy. However, the Eagles are making attempts to keep Gannon on staff, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

“I have heard, for what it’s worth, that the Eagles have made an effort to keep Gannon in the fold, with the Arizona interest having been rumored for a while,” said Breer in his recent article.

Gannon, who was outstanding in the postseason leading up to the Super Bowl, struggled against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Gannon’s defense let up 24 points in the second half and failed to get a sack, despite having a league leading 70 sacks.

Furthermore, with potentially losing both coordinators to head coaching vacancies, the Eagles may be left to look within the organization.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles are expected to promote quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson. As for if Gannon leaves, I’d expect the Eagles look into their defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson.
