It appears the Indianapolis Colts have narrowed their head coach search. According to Adam Schefter, the Colts plan to hire Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen following Super Bowl LVII if the two sides can agree to a contract.
Despite the Colts narrowing their search, the two sides cannot negotiate a contract until after the Super Bowl.
Steichen has served as the Eagles OC for the past two seasons. If hired by the Colts. he will get his first stint as an NFL head coach at just 37 years old.
Under Steichen, the Eagles offense had six players selected to the Pro Bowl, as well as an MVP runner-up quarterback in Jalen Hurts. Furthermore, Steichen helped produce an offense that had a league-leading 32 rushing touchdowns.
The Colts were previously coached by Frank Reich and interim head coach Jeff Saturday. The two combined to lead the team to a 4-12-1 record this past season. Reich was relieved of head coaching duties following the Colts Week 9 loss to the Patriots, and the team hired Saturday to fill the role.
Saturday was once thought to be the leading candidate for the full-time job in Indianapolis. Nevertheless, it now seems the team has shifted focus towards completing a deal with Steichen.
Following the departure of Steichen, the Eagles plan to promote quarterback coach Brian Johnson as the teams next offensive coordinator, per Schefter.
Johnson has been a coveted name with teams in search of an offensive coordinator. The Eagles quarterback coach has received many requests to be interviewed. However, it now appears likely he will stay in Philadelphia under a new job title.
Moreover, Johnson has known Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts since he was four years old. Hurts continuously praises Johnson.
“It’s definitely just the beginning for both of us,” said Hurts. “I can’t say enough about the type of person he is and how hard he works at his craft every single day.”
While no deal is finalized between Steichen and the Colts as of now, it appears evident a deal will get done.
