Mecole Hardman was arguably the most impactful player for the Chiefs on Sunday night and boy has it been a long time coming for the former second round pick back in 2019. His story is not exactly how Chiefs fans thought it would play out, but they have nothing to complain about after Hardman sealed the deal in Super Bowl LVIII.
Hardman’s Return Home
Hardman spent his first four season with Kansas City as a side piece to a loaded wide receiving core lead by Tyreek Hill. To begin the 2023 season the Chiefs looked to rebuild their offense which left Hardman getting sent off to New York. However, after a short stint with the Jets, Hardman found his way back in Kansas City in hopes to help their struggling offense. His presence remained unknown as he totaled only 118 yards on 21 targets after the mid-season trade, but as we all know it’s a totally different season once the playoffs begin.
The Thief in the Night
There’s always that one player that shows out when the lights are the brightest and Mecole Hardman was that man on Sunday after catching the game winning touchdown pass in overtime. The best part about his only touchdown of the year was that he had no clue. You heard that right… in a press conference following the victory Hardman told reporters from the Associated Press that he “blacked out” and “forgot we actually won the game”.
Patrick Mahomes added “I threw a touchdown to this dude to end the game, and he looked at me”. “He had no idea. I said, ‘Dude, we just won the Super Bowl.’ He had no idea. He didn’t even celebrate at the beginning.”
However, It didn’t take long after for him to realize and start popping the champagne. Wondering if he knew he had two other catches earlier in the game (lol).
We Love to See it
Who would’ve known Mecole Hardman would be the difference in Super Bowl LVIII, but stories like these are why we love sports. In the redzone of the biggest game of the year all eyes were on anybody but Hardman, but with the game on the line playmakers make plays and that’s exactly what he did. Mecole Hardman made the the biggest play of his career and I’m sure Chiefs fans are extremely appreciative to have him home.
