After a strong start to his 2023 campaign, Philadelphia Phillies No. 2 prospect Mick Abel could be called up to the majors in the near future.

Abel, 21 years old, continues to carve up Double-A opponents with the Reading Fightin Phils. Over his last four starts, Abel has compiled 23 strikeouts with just four earned runs. He’s also produced back-to-back outings with zero walks.

In his latest game against the Hartford Yard Goats, the Colorado Rockies Double-A affiliate, Abel rung up eight batters while only allowing one run in six innings pitched.

He is currently ranked as MLB.com’s 41st best prospect.

Drafted with the 15th pick in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft, the right-hander struggled to find his footing in his first two years in the Phillies farm system. Command was a major struggle for the youngster prior to this season. In 2021 and 2022, Abel combined to walk 77 batters in 37 games started. This season has been different though.

The Phillies could seek to call up the young prospect as a consequence of their struggles this season. Bailey Falter has struggled mightily after a successful first couple outings to begin the season. He currently holds a 5.75 ERA and an 0-7 record. While arguments could be made that Abel has not had enough experience in the Double-A scene, he is the Phillies’ best option if the team decides to bring up an arm. While Philadelphia is expecting Ranger Suarez back soon, it may not be enough to fix its pitching struggles. A look to the farm system may be needed to ignite a fire in the 15-19 Phils.

It was thought that top prospect Andrew Painter would see a call up before Abel, as the 19-year-old has dominated every aspect of the minors. But with Painter recovering form an elbow injury that occurred in Spring Training, all eyes have shifted towards Abel.
