Saquon Barkley

Saquon Barkley is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year $37.75 million, $26 million guaranteed deal, according to Adam Schefter. Barkley is no stranger to playing for a Pennsylvania fanbase going back to his college days at Penn State where he recorded fifty-three total touchdowns and was a first round pick. The 27-year-old ex-New York Giant will have an opportunity to go up against his former team twice a year.

The Philadelphia Eagles had lost their 2023 leading rusher D’Andre Swift after he signed with the Chicago Bears. Bringing in Saquon Barkley was a big move for the Eagles because not only did they need a premier running back, but they also took one of the best players from their division rival. The rushing attack for the Eagles has always been their strong suit in years past, but with the addition of Barkley, it will be a new look offense in 2024.

The Eagles’ successful rushing attack has had a lot to do with Jalen Hurts. Hurts has been the best at running the “Tush Push” or “Brotherly Shove” or whatever you want to call it. Usually when the Eagles have had a short-yardage situation they run the QB sneak and Hurts would more than likely get the first down. If Hurts is not getting the first down he is most likely getting one of his fifteen touchdowns. Now with center Jason Kelce retiring, it will be exciting to see if the newly acquired Barkley will get those 1-2 yard carries instead of Hurts.

Barkley is coming off of an average year for the New York Giants. He only scored 10 total touchdowns and rushed for 962 yards. He was not involved as much in the passing game, only catching 41 passes for 280 yards. Barkley’s health was also been an issue with the Giants. He played in 14/17 games for the Giants last season and only played 16 games twice in his career.

Even so, Barkley is poised for a breakout year with this Eagles’ elite rushing offense. It could even be comparable to Barkley’s best season, that being his rookie year where he totaled 2,028 scrimmage yards with 15 total touchdowns. Finally, Saquon Barkley on an Eagles offense that rushed for over 2,100 yards and 22 touchdowns is trouble.
