The Seattle Seahawks and QB Geno Smith have agreed on a new three-year contract worth up to $105 million, Monday. The 32-year old resurrected his career this past season, leading the Seahawks to the playoffs in their first season since trading Russell Wilson.
They were able to get this deal done ahead of Tuesday’s franchise tag deadline, which helped them avoid an extended negotiation period. Seattle is content with having Smith to lead their offense in the near future.
Smith won Comeback Player of the Year in 2022, after throwing for 4.282 yards and 30 touchdowns. He had a passer rating of 100.9, while completing nearly 70% of his passes. The Seahawks were able to earn a haul of picks from the Denver Broncos during last year’s offseason, and expect a fast rebuild to help Smith succeed.
Seahawks in 2023
They’ve already proved they are ahead of schedule when they earned the last wildcard spot in the NFC in 2022. If Seattle wants to justify this contract, they’ll need to return to the playoffs next season.
They own the 5th and 20th picks in the 2023 NFL draft, and while this contract doesn’t mean they won’t draft a QB, they might’ve bought themselves the ability to focus on other positions in the draft.
QB Geno Smith might be hoping for some offensive line help in the draft. Seattle’s offensive line ranked near the bottom of the league overall. There’s some great options for them early in the draft, so look for them to potentially help their newly signed quarterback.
