The Denver Broncos have finalized an agreement with the New Orleans Saints to receive head coach Sean Payton and a 2024 third-round pick in exchange for Denver’s 2023 first round-pick and 2024 second-round pick.

Sean Payton was still under contract with the Saints, thus requiring a return package agreement from the team. He carries a 161-97 record as a head coach. The Broncos finished with a 5-12 record, which was last in the AFC West. They fired former head coach Nathaniel Hackett just over a month ago, and before the season had ended.

Earlier today, reports suggested that Payton and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh were both in play for the position. Ultimately, coach Payton won the job. San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans was also an option. The Texans were able to acquire Ryans as their head coach, forcing Denver to choose Payton.

Payton, aged 59, won Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints, and will now be tasked with building his new staff in Denver in an effort to improve the team’s record under new ownership.
