Death, tax, and Sevilla winning the Europa League. The Spanish club has won their seventh Europa League trophy in the 21st century after defeating Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma in a penalty shootout. They are still the most successful squad in the tournament’s history by a landslide. More interestingly, they still have yet to lose in the finals they have been to.
Sevilla rallied back from being 1-0 down in the first half, equalized early in the second half, and played great football throughout the whole game before sealing the faith in the penalty shootout. A clutch performance from the boys under Jose Luis Mendilibar was headlined by Bono, who saved two shots in the big moment. With the win in Budapest, Sevilla will return to Champions League football next year. A lifesaver for Sevilla since they had a horrendous domestic campaign, finishing 11th on the table. Coach Mendilibar was also the third coach for the team this season, but he made the miracle happen.
For AS Roma, their effort was not enough to keep Jose Mourinho’s European Cup streak alive. They let Sevilla take the upper hand since the second half and ultimately crumbled in the shootout. Gianluca Mancini was the talking point of today’s game. The Italian had a brilliant assist for Dybala but then scored the own goal to level for Sevilla. The pressure got into him as he failed to complete his task from the spot that changed the momentum. However, the hunt for the Europa League is not all over for AS Roma. They will return to the competition next year, seeking revenge.
