“We’re not trading those two players.” These were the words of Sean Payton in late March when addressing the trade rumors around Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy. Indeed, this morning, Sutton doubled down on Payton’s comments from months ago.
“It’s flattering that other teams see me as a guy that can come in and be a guy for them,” Sutton said Friday at Denver Broncos’ OTAs. “I love that I’m here. This is where, ultimately, you guys know that I want to be at. This is home.”
A lot of the rumors circulating Sutton and Jeudy centered around the fact that they lead an undoubtedly very talented receiving group on an underperforming offense. However, instead of breaking up the players, the Broncos chose to bring in on new coaching staff. Following the release of Nathaniel Hackett, the Denver front office brought in former New Orleans Saint head coach Sean Payton. Sutton says he’s determined to succeed in his role as a Bronco and is studying Payton’s offense to ensure it.
“I actually just got, not too long ago, I just got Michael Thomas‘ 2019 targets from his year that he broke the (receptions) record,” Sutton said. “Just diving into it. Being able to see how he may have ran a route that we are learning right now. Figuring out ways to be able to get open because obviously he had a really good year that year. So, to be able to find ways to implement the things he did well into my game, I feel like we’ll be able to have a lot of success.”
It will be interesting to see if Payton can turn around this Broncos offense. Plenty of players underperformed last year and if it happens again, it will be highly unlikely they decide to run it back again. If the beginning of the season is a disappointment out of the gates, trade rumors could circle back around the trade deadline. But it seems as of now we can put the trade rumors surrounding Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton to bed.
