Week eight of the college football season had some great moments, highlighted by LSU’s home victory over Ole Miss and Oklahoma State’s shootout win over Texas. This week brings us some classic rivalry games and other exciting conference matchups. Here are your top five college football matchups of week nine.
Honorable Mentions:
- No. 20 Cincinnati (6-1) at UCF (5-2): This rivalry began in 2015 and has not disappointed over the past 5 years as both programs have improved. This year should be no different as the Knights have an opportunity to beat Cincinnati at home and secure second place in the AAC.
- No. 7 Ole Miss (6-1) at Texas A&M (3-4): The Texas A&M debacle has been so interesting to follow as a college football fan. More freshmen from the Aggies’ historic 2022 recruiting class have reportedly been suspended for this upcoming game. Meanwhile, Ole Miss is a solid football team looking to bounce back from a tough loss to LSU. Tune into this one if you want to watch a program on the verge of collapse
5. Florida (4-3) at No. 1 Georgia (7-0)
When: Saturday, 3:30 pm ET
Where: TIAA Bank Stadium, FL
Spread: Georgia (-22.5)
Nicknamed “The Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”, it is one of the more intense and heated rivalries in college football. Georgia is the most enormous favorite in this rivalry’s history dating back to available data since 1995, according to OnlyGators.com. Georgia’s offense ranks second in yards per game and will be facing one of the worst third-down defenses in the country. Florida will have to pull off quite a miracle to upset the Dawgs but this should be a very physical contest from start to finish.
4. Notre Dame (4-3) at No. 13 Syracuse (6-1)
When: Saturday, 12:00 pm ET
Where: JMA Wireless Dome, NY
Spread: Syracuse (-2.5)
Syracuse will have another big test after blowing an 11-point lead against Clemson. The Orange had a victory within reach but were held scoreless in the second half while Clemson rallied in the fourth quarter. They can get back on track against a talented but struggling Notre Dame team. Keep an eye out for Syracuse runningback Sean Tucker, who has put together another impressive year so far with 698 rushing yards and eight total touchdowns. For the Fighting Irish, quarterback Drew Pyne will be the one to watch as he faces the seventh-ranked defense in the country.
3. No. 9 Oklahoma State (6-1) at No. 22 Kansas State (5-2)
When: Saturday, 3:30 pm ET
Where: Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium, Kansas
Spread: Kansas State (-1.5)
Oklahoma State will play their third straight-ranked opponent this week. Two weeks ago they lost in an overtime thriller to TCU, but most recently they overcame Texas in another close shootout. All of the competitive Big 12 teams have two things in common: electric offenses and porous defenses. Expect no different in this matchup with Kansas State, who also fell short to TCU last week. The winner of this contest will take second place in the Big 12.
2. No. 19 Kentucky (5-2) at No. 3 Tennessee (7-0)
When: 7:00 pm ET
Where: Neyland Stadium, TN
Spread: Tennessee (-12)
The locomotive that is Tennessee has yet to slow down. Kentucky will be the next team tasked with upsetting the unbeaten Vols. The Wildcats are coming off a bye week and the added rest should be a big help for Will Levis, who has been battling multiple injuries this season. It will be interesting to see if Kentucky can make this game competitive, as another loss here will likely force them out of the top 25. Tennessee will be looking to start 8-0 for the first time since 1998, the year they won their last national title.
1. No. 2 Ohio State (7-0) at No. 13 Penn State (6-1)
When: 12:00 pm ET
Where: Beaver Stadium, PN
Spread: Ohio State (-14.5)
This great rivalry game kicks off at noon and will be the highest-ranked matchup of the weekend. Ohio State leads the all-time series 22-14 and has won the last 5 meetings, but we’ll see if coach James Franklin has finally closed the gap between these teams. The Nittany Lions will certainly have their hands full against Heisman frontrunner CJ Stroud and receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka. Penn State is coming off a dominant victory over Minnesota where Sean Clifford threw four touchdowns. The senior quarterback is on pace for a career year and has a chance to leave a lasting memory with a home win over the Buckeyes.
