France’s own Victor Wembanyama has announced he is declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft. The most hyped-up prospect since LeBron James went on the NBA Today shows on ESPN to make it official. He is considered the consensus number-one overall pick and the team that drafts him will get a once in a generational player.

Wembanyama shared his thoughts on achieving his dream to go pro during his interview on ESPN saying “Declaring for the draft … it’s something crazy, I’m not realizing yet,” I realized pretty young I wanted to play in the NBA but it becomes a reality more every day. I’m so lucky to have this dream within the reach of my hand.” One of the top storylines this season was the absurd amount of tanking teams trying to get the highest odds to get the number one pick. Resting players, trading players and purposefully choking games away last minute all for this man. When asked which team of preference, he said “There is no wrong team,” I am not worried; there is no bad organization. I never tell myself I don’t like to go there. Every organization is so careful about their players that there’s no wrong destination.”

He also talked about improving his body frame and gaining a little weight in order to improve his durability since not many players have sustainable careers with similar builds. “I’ve been working more than ever on my body with my personal trainer Guillaume [Alquier],” Wembanyama said. “I’m ready to go over all sorts of obstacles. So far it’s worked pretty well. I haven’t missed a game yet. I’ve been there for my guys every game.

Wembanyama had a great season for the Metropolitans 92 averaging 21.5 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and 2.3 assists per game and leading the French league in almost every statistical category. He can pretty much do anything, shooting, rebounding, and passing the rock you name it. And to do it at 7-feet-5-inches with guard-like skills is unique, similar to Bol Bol in a sense. Regardless, the lottery will decide who wins the Wemby sweepstakes next month.
