This past Monday, Becky Lynch and Lita defeated Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky of Damage CTR to win the Women’s tag titles.
Lynch and Lita are the 14th pair to hold the Women’s tag titles since its inception in 2019. This win adds another layer to the slow-burning Bayley vs Becky rivalry. It also seems to be leading to a 6-woman tag match at WrestleMania with Trish Stratus joining the new champions.
But this rivalry could have the same storybook ending without having to carry the load of the Women’s Tag titles.
WWE has recently treated the titles like an afterthought. And honestly, it lost its appeal shortly after being introduced. At 2019’s Elimination Chamber event to crown the inaugural champions, the women’s division was in a place where the title showed potential to be a catalyst of storylines. You had The Riott Squad (Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan), Absolution (Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville), The Iiconics (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce), and the first champions, the Boss ‘n Hug Connection (Sasha Banks and Bayley).
The Problem with the Women’s Tag Titles
Even that Chamber match was plagued with the issue that would continue to haunt these championships: impromptu teams that have no justification for being together. That match had the pairing of Carmella and Naomi, who were literally thrown together weeks prior.
Moving forward you not only had random teams competing for the titles but actually winning them. Teams like Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross, Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler, Carmella and Queen Zelina, and countless others held the gold. Zelina even beat Carmella in the Queen’s Crown tournament prior to teaming up.
The WWE Universe knew there was a major problem with the booking of the women’s tag division when Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out on the company as champions. The mismanagement of the division had turned the titles into props at this point. Seriously, who has Damage CTRL legitimately had a rivalry with involving the tag titles?
The women’s roster is loaded with talent, there’s no denying that. If creative is aiming to use this division to the highest potential, I believe a minor singles title is the answer. Especially if you give a captivating character a dominant title run to establish legitimacy, like Piper Niven or Carmella.
Overall, the buildup to Becky’s final clash with Damage CTRL is going to be must-see TV. But I can’t help but wonder if it would be more of a big fight feel if the women’s tag titles weren’t included.
