Austin Ekeler

For several years now, there have been discussions of Austin Ekeler leaving Los Angeles. Now that time has come as as Austin Ekeler is headed to the Washington Commanders, according to Tom Pelissero.

It’s been seven wonderful seasons in LA for the running back, especially since Chargers QB Justin Herbert was drafted. However, all good things must come to an end eventually. After those seven seasons, Ekeler finds himself third in franchise history in both rushing yards (4335) and rushing touchdowns (69). When he’s healthy, Austin Ekeler is one of the best quarterbacks available for Fantasy Football. That’s mainly due to his dual ability to be both a great rusher and receiver.

The 2023 campaign was not very kind to Ekeler or the Chargers. They finished with a 5-12 record with the running back only having 1,064 all-purpose yards and 6 total touchdowns. Far below the numbers that we are used to seeing from Ekeler.

It’s been a busy day on the running back front. We have already seen Tony Pollard agree to terms with the Titans. Saquon Barkley is headed to Philadelphia and D’Andre Swift is going to Chicago. Now, Austin Ekeler is headed to the Commanders.

With him heading to Washington, we need to face it, the days of him being a No. 1 Fantasy running back could be over. He went from averaging more than 20.5 PPR points per game in each of the previous two seasons – and no worse than 15.6 PPR points per game since 2019 – to just 12.1 PPR points in 2023 in 14 games. He’s best suited to be a third-down back who works in the passing game.
