The Browns lost in a very dramatic fashion. Up by 13 points with 1:55 left on the game clock. ESPN noted that at this very moment the Browns had a 99.9% chance to win this game. What would follow in the coming moments was quite devastating. The Browns would give up a quick score to the Jets Corey Davis that left the secondary confused. In addition, after that score, the Jets would then recover an on-side kick. The success rate of that is very low. Which then finally led to the Jets having a short field and scoring to take the lead. The Browns tried to rally but didn’t have any late-game magic this week.
Offense
The Cleveland Browns offense made major improvements this week after looking confused in week 1. Jacoby Brissett played much better and was very efficient. Going 22-27 229 yards 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The passing game improved mightily. Brissett and Amari Cooper showed they were on the same page all game. Cooper had 9 receptions for 102 yards. However, the running game was again dynamic and the browns had a total of 184 rushing yards altogether. Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb seemed to be on their way to being the heroes of the game late in the fourth quarter. This duo is very dynamic and has been what everyone expected this far in the season.
Defense
Above all heading into this season, the Brown’s defense was supposed to be the bright spot. In addition, off-season speculation was that the defensive unit would carry the weight of the team for 11 games while Deshaun Watson is out. miscommunication has cost this defense two weeks in a row. The secondary looked confused and out of sorts all game. Defensive coordinator Joe Woods game plan was a confusing one. Didn’t seem to rush 37-year-old Joe Flacco, who isn’t very mobile. Along with playing in a zone in major spots of the game. Joe Flacco was 26-44 with 309 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. The Jets ran the ball effectively
Special Teams
The Browns special teams have been a problem area on this Browns team for years now. For instance, this unit gave up a fake point at an inopportune time. However, they also didn’t recover an onside kick when the percentage of recovery for the kicking team is pretty much 0. Along with punt returner question marks, this unit overall seems ill-prepared. With a missed extra point that could’ve had the game tied when the Jets scored.
Jets
The New York Jets stuck around all game and did not quit. As a result of week 1 play that was not good, they played at an extremely high level the entire game. They attacked the Browns defense that looked unprepared all game. As shown above, the Jet’s offense confused the secondary on the back of Garrett Wilson. Wilson had 8 receptions for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns, one was the game-winning touchdown.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Browns defense needs to make major improvements. It needs to be corrected immediately, especially with a short week. The offense put this team in a position to win. At this point, it seems to be a communication issue. That can be corrected. Cleveland has a quick turnaround and plays Thursday night. This team needs a dominant win against a division rival. A positive is that all the other teams in the division lost as well.
