The FBI contacted Brett Favre about his role in a welfare scandal that has rocked the state of Mississippi. This, along with the recent text messages leaked may further indite Favre as a partial conspirator in the scandal. It has again landed the former Packers quarterback in an undesired spotlight.
The Background
Favre has confirmed that he had borrowed money from the state. However, he denies any knowledge that of its primary use of helping families and individuals on welfare. Between 2016 and 2018, Favre allegedly asked the non-profit Mississippi Community Education Center to donate $5 million towards a new volleyball court for his alma mater the University of Southern Mississippi. Whether it was at Favre’s request is up for debate, but the money was in fact donated. It should also be noted that his daughter was a student and volleyball player there.
“Hey brother [his wife] Deanna and [I] still owe 1.1 million on Vball,” Favre purportedly texted John Davis, the former head of the Mississippi Department of Human Services, according to Mississippi Today. “Any chance you and Nancy can help with that? They don’t need it at the moment. You and Nancy stuck your neck out for me with jake and Prevacus I know and that’s going to turn out very good I believe.”

The same organization paid him $1.1 million to give motivational speeches. Those speeches have never been given. Favre has repaid most of that money, but $228,000 in interest remains unpaid. Another organization, Prevacus received around $2.15 million in funds. Favre is on record as being an investor in the company.
These accusations have come from auditor Shad White. White has alleged Favre knowingly used his public figure to influence former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant into sending the money to Favre. White reports that around $70 million in welfare funds have been misspent. Other notable names included on the audit include former wrestler Ted DiBiase. DiBiase allegedly received at least $3 million of the money. Former Oklahoma Sooner Marcus Dupree is also listed as receiving $370,000, some of which went to his horse ranch.
The FBI has contacted Brett Favre, but as of the publishing of this article has not been charged with any crime.
