It’s been only a day, but we’ve already seen several high-profile quarterbacks enter their names into the transfer portal since it opened. Let’s take a look at the top 10 QBs in the transfer portal along with a snapshot of their career stats.
10. Kyle McCord
Eligibility: Two years
Games Played: 24
Total Passing Stats: 406 Att, 3,776 Yds, 66.5%, 27 TD, 8 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 44 Att, -77 Yds, 0 TD
The former Ohio State QB is hitting the transfer portal after serving his first season as their full-time starter. McCord waited two years behind CJ Stroud and won the job in his junior year, leading the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record. But he isn’t the flashiest QB or the most dynamic athlete, and his departure from Ohio State seemed like a mutual parting of ways. Ryan Day may be looking to improve at the position through the portal with some of the guys further down this list. Kyle McCord may not be an elite quarterback, but he has plenty of starting experience against some of the top defenses in college football and will be a solid pickup for any school that gets him.
9. Grayson McCall
Eligibility: One year
Games Played: 42
Total Passing Stats: 1,016 Att, 10,005 Yds, 69.9%, 88 TD, 14 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 350 Att, 1,113 Yds, 18 TD
Grayson McCall is testing the portal again after sticking around at ECU for one more year. He played in just seven games this season due to an injury, but threw 24 touchdowns to just two interceptions in 11 starts last season. McCall was the Sun Belt Player of the Year in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and is one of the most experienced QBs to enter the portal. He will be looking to make the jump to the Power 5 Conference and is reportedly set to visit NC State this week.
8. Riley Leonard
Eligibility: One year
Games Played: 27
Total Passing Stats: 619 Att, 4,450 Yds, 61.7%, 24 TD, 10 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 229 Att, 1224 Yds, 19 TD
With Mike Elko taking the job at Texas A&M, the former Duke QB is entering the transfer portal for his final year. Like McCall, Leonard played in only seven games this season due to a toe injury suffered against Louisville, but flashed tons of potential in 2022 when he started all 13 games and led the Blue Devils to a 9-3 season. Leonard is a true dual-threat QB who can also hit the deep ball with consistency. Right now, Notre Dame looks like his top option as he is set to visit them this week.
7. Will Howard
Eligibility: One Year
Games Played: 34
Total Passing Stats: 779 Att, 5,786 Yds, 58.8%, 48 TD, 25 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 226 Att, 351 Yds, 19 TD
Will Howard is entering the transfer portal as he looks to up his draft stock with a year of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-5 and 240-pound quarterback solidified himself as the greatest QB in Kansas State history, helping them win the Big 12 Championship in 2022 and holding several passing records. Howard has several teams interested in his services, most notably Nebraska, Wisconsin, Miami, and USC.
6. DJ Uiagalelei
Eligibility: One year
Games Played: 41
Total Passing Stats: 1,176 Att, 8,319 Yds, 59.1%, 57 TD, 24 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 343 Att, 1132 Yds, 21 TD
DJ will enter the transfer portal but is reportedly still deciding whether or not he will enter the NFL Draft. However, his production and experience will be in high demand for several Power 5 teams looking for a proven starter. DJ’s numbers won’t “wow” most people, but he has a 30-10 overall record as a starter and is coming off his best season yet with Oregon State. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, DJ could be making his return to the ACC with teams like FSU and Louisville taking the most interest in him.
5. Dante Moore
Eligibility: Three Years
Games Played: 9
Total Passing Stats: 213 Att, 1,610 Yds, 53.5%, 11 TD, 9 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 45 Att, -84 Yds, 0 TD
Dante Moore is one of the younger options entering the transfer portal but started 9 games as a freshman at UCLA. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound QB may be the most unpolished player on this list, but he was one of the top QB recruits in the 2023 recruiting cycle and is still in very high demand. The Detroit native has been contacted by Michigan, Miami, FSU, and Oregon.
4. Aiden Chiles
Eligibility: Three years
Games Played: 9
Total Passing Stats: 35 Att, 309 Yds, 68.6%, 4 TD, 0 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 17 Att, 79 Yds, 3 TD
The least experienced of the QBs on this list, Chiles has 0 starts under his belt but has tons of potential and three years of eligibility remaining. He signed with Oregon State in the 2023 class and was ranked the No. 12 quarterback in the nation according to the 247 Composite. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound flashed his dual-threat ability while backing up DJ Uigalelei and is rumored to follow his former head coach, Jonathan Smith, to Michigan State.
3. Dillon Gabriel
Eligibility: One Year
Games Played: 50
Total Passing Stats: 1,664 Att, 14,865 Yds, 63.4%, 125 TD, 26 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 349 Att, 1,060 Yds, 26 TD
Dillon Gabriel will enter the portal for a second time following a great season with Oklahoma where he threw 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions. The 22-year-old is the most experienced QB in the portal and perhaps the most productive, finishing sixth in total passing yards among FBS quarterbacks this season. Dillon Gabriel is expected to visit Oregon this week, which is currently his most likely destination according to ON3’s Pete Nakos.
2. Will Rogers
Eligibility: Two Years
Games Played: 43
Total Passing Stats: 1,876 Att, 69.3%, 12,315 Yds, 94 TD, 28 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 165 Att, -316 Yds, 2 TD
Will Rogers is one of the more overlooked QBs in the transfer portal but is truly one of the best options available. His numbers in the SEC are extremely impressive. Rogers ranks second all-time in total passing yards and holds the most career completions in SEC history. He enjoyed his best years under Mike Leach but struggled this season under Zach Arnett. Washington is reportedly the heavy favorite to land the grad transfer, according to 247’s Chris Hummer.
1. Cam Ward
Eligibility: One year
Games Played: 44
Total Passing Stats: 1,875 Att, 64.5%, 13,875 Yds, 119 TD, 30 INT
Total Rushing Stats: 339 Att, 269 Yds, 16 TD
My favorite QB currently in the portal is Cam Ward, who is also considering entering the NFL Draft. Ward is a four-year starter who transferred to Washington State after two seasons with Incarnate Word. His move to the FBS has been very successful, accumulating over 3,000 passing yards and over 20 passing touchdowns in each of his last two seasons. Ohio State, Washington, Miami, and Texas A&M have all reportedly been in contact with the graduate transfer QB.
